Her name is Diva. She is a big white cockatoo, she lives in an enclosure off the back porch of a home in Guyton, and the day we met her the roof over her head was giving up.
This one was not a paint job. It was not drywall. It was a phone call from a woman who could not sleep right because of a bird, and honestly, that is the kind of call we like.
The roof was the problem, and it was turning into a real risk
Diva chews. That is what a cockatoo that size does. Wire, wood, anything her beak can reach, and she is smart enough to keep working the same spot until it lets go. Over time the roof over her space came apart. Once the roof over an aviary opens up, it stops being a small repair. It is an open door.
Wild birds land where they can get in. Whatever they carry comes in with them, and for one bird living in one space, that is not a maybe, that is a real risk. Her owner had been worried about it for a while and she had reached the point where she could not let it sit any longer.
The other half of it was space. Diva is a big bird in a small house and she had been asking for more room the only way a bird can ask, by taking the place apart.
What we built
We pulled the failed roof off and framed a new one across the top with fresh 1x2, straight and tight, no gaps left for anything to slip through. Over the framing we set clear plastic roof panels.
That part mattered most to her owner. A solid roof would have stopped the rain and taken the daylight with it. Clear panels keep both. Diva stays dry when the sky opens up in the afternoon, which around here it does most of the summer, and she still gets sun through her roof all day long.
Then the crew cleaned out her whole space, top to bottom, so she came back to something that felt new instead of something that had been patched.
Why clear panels on an aviary roof
Light is not a luxury for a bird. Daylight drives how a parrot eats, sleeps, and molts. Cover the top in solid metal and you fix the leak while you take away the thing that keeps her healthy. Clear panels on tight framing give you both, and they hold up in Georgia humidity better than the old shade cloth and screen that were up there before.
The crew fell for her
We will be honest about the schedule on this one. It ran a little long, and the wood was not the reason. Diva talked the entire time. She watched every cut. She answered the guys when they talked to her, and they talked to her a lot. By the last day they were going out of their way to say goodbye to her before they loaded the truck.
She is a genius. Anyone who has been around a cockatoo knows what that means, and anyone who has not should watch her for two minutes. The video on this page still has its sound on for exactly that reason. That is Diva, and that is one of our guys answering her back.
